Generative artificial intelligence (AI), is a subset of AI that uses machine learning models to create new, original content, such as images, text, code, or music, based on patterns and structures learned from existing data. Explore different departments and learnhow Cornell is strategizing for the future, evaluating AI tools, implementing AI in the world, and coordinating AI initiatives on the Cornell campuses.

Cornell's AI strategy

With the rapid growth of generative AI tools, Cornell, like so many of our peer institutions, is exploring how this new area of AI impacts our institution.

Cornell's AI strategy has four core elements grounded in the university's core values

  1. BUILD on the task force recommendations, and partner across the Ithaca campus, Cornell Tech, and Weill Cornell Medicine to pilot a range of AI services.
  2. ESTABLISH the AI Advisory Council to help explore policy, practice, ethical use, and priorities for AI access, experimentation, and investments.
  3. SOLICIT AI project ideas across research, education, and administration from faculty, staff, and students.
  4. LAUNCH the AI Initiatives team, a cross-functional technical group of people from research, teaching and learning, and information technology from the Ithaca campus and Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City.

Microsoft Copilot Enterprise
(for Web Browsers)

This university-wide “private” version of ChatGPT and Dall-E enables faculty, staff, and students who are 18 years of age or older to experiment with generative AI text, image, and coding tools without storing the person’s login and chat data or being used to train the large language models.

Copilot in Windows
(Available on Some Cornell Computers)

Copilot in Windows has been integrated into the Windows 11 operating system. It can help answer questions, check the weather, or adjust Windows settings, like turning on dark mode or snapping windows side by side. It will also answer questions in the same way that Copilot Enterprise will.


Adobe Firefly
Available with an Adobe License

Firefly allows you to generate images from text, then manipulate and edit them. Coming soon: generative voice and video content.

Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot integrates AI capabilities into various Microsoft 365 applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Teams, SharePoint and more. The university is evaluating the cost, privacy, security, and licensing requirements of this service. 


Github Copilot

GitHub Copilot is an AI-powered pair programmer developed by GitHub (owned by Microsoft) in collaboration with OpenAI. It assists developers by providing autocompletions and code suggestions while they write code. 


Zoom AI Companion

Zoom's AI Companion gives hosts and participants sharable meeting summaries and next-steps lists, “highlight reels” in recordings, catch-up options for people joining a meeting late, and more. Currently, the university is evaluating security and privacy considerations for these new features.

Oversight of AI

AI use at Cornell is guided by the university’s values and principles of ethical integrity, social responsibility, inclusivity, innovation, transparency, and sustainability.

Your Responsibility When Using AI At Cornell

The Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence outline how your use of AI tools intersects with your accountability, confidentiality, and privacy, as well as the expectations of applying AI to teaching, research, and administration.

The AI Advisory Council

University volunteers from the faculty, staff, and student community are being asked to serve on the inaugural AI Advisory Council. This council will:

  • provide strategic direction for AI initiatives, pilots, technology, and projects;
  • identify and address potential risks and challenges associated with AI deployment;
  • assist in the formulation of policies related to AI ethics, privacy, security, and compliance.

The AI Initiatives Team

IT staff from several departments serve on the AI Initiatives team. They will triage, recommend, and develop AI initiatives. Submit AI project ideas for research, education, or administration.
